NAME: Lucilius
CANON: Granblue Fantasy
CANON POINT: After he's been killed by Lucifer
AGE: Unknown exactly, but he definitely looks and acts like an adult. Implied to be older than he appears.
BACKGROUND:
GBF is mostly set on floating islands, with the main crew traveling about on an airship. Lucilius is part of an arc named What Makes the Sky Blue, which focuses predominantly on angels. Here's some fundamental terms, because GBF lore is a little scatterbrained:
Skydwellers: The native populations of the world, e.g. humans and others like erunes, draphs, etc.
Astrals: An invading race from 'beyond the stars.' Astrals basically took over the world and restructured it with their science before being driven off many centuries later by the Skydwellers. Astrals are commonly thought to be extinct (not entirely true), though their ruins and inventions are still sought after.
Primal Beasts (Primals): Beasts created by the Astrals. Originally they served to regulate the world, but eventually, they were used more as weapons. With the Astrals gone, many primals are now often regarded as deities, spirits, etc.
Angels: The very first primals, mostly created by Lucilius. The most powerful angels (primarchs) oversaw the evolution of the skies and held major duties such as protecting the world, controlling the elements, keeping islands afloat, etc. Lesser angels were limited in function and intelligence.
Crimson Horizon: The current world (Sky Realm) sits on top of another world called the Crimson Horizon. The Crimson Horizon is filled with monsters and chaos, breaking the laws of physics and generally being a disaster zone. The two are connected by a giant tower called Pandemonium, which is sealed off by the leader of the angels (the Supreme Primarch).
Way back when, god (known as the Creator, the Omnipotent, etc.) was torn into two, one half governing the Sky Realm and the other cast into the stars. The latter, the god of the Astrals, made his own creations with the same building blocks as the Sky Realm, and the two civilizations mirror each other in many ways.
In the Sky Realm, god created a Speaker, a powerful being who spreads god's word, only intervening should a force directly oppose god's influence. For the Astrals, this Speaker was effectively cloned, but existed unknowing of his place or purpose in the grand design of the universe.
The former goes by the name Lucio—the latter is Lucilius.
Lucilius was an Astral researcher, active 2000 years before present canon. He created the first angels to oversee evolution and generally keep the world afloat, becoming one with and at times replacing nature itself. His first two creations are angels named Lucifer and Belial; Lucifer becomes the angel all other primarchs answer to, working together as neutral overseers to observe evolution. Belial is Lucifer's adjutant, but eventually becomes a researcher directly under Lucilius, who begins a new project called the fallen angels.
After toiling and following the process of evolution for years, Lucilius eventually decides he doesn't like what he sees and commits to destroying the entire world. Working with Belial and another Astral named Beelzebub, they coerce both regular and fallen angels to rebel against the Astral government. The rebellion is rigged to fail, and in the process, many angels are destroyed, and the rest are imprisoned in Pandemonium.
The ultimate goal of the rebellion is to collect the cores of destroyed angels—these cores are essentially their essence, and typically incredibly difficult to remove, lending to an angel's immortality. Lucilius proceeds to meld together countless cores, creating a ridiculous monstrosity (Avatar) that he plans to use to destroy Pandemonium, which would in turn release chaos from the Crimson Horizon and destroy the Sky Realm.
Lucifer figures out his plan and immediately kills him, after which he... is dead for 2000 years until Belial manages to bring him back to life. I'll be taking him post-death, pre-revival.
PERSONALITY:
Lucilius is lauded as one of the greatest minds in Granblue Fantasy, and naturally, decides to use his genius to the worst possible ends.
An accomplished researcher, Lucilius is defined by his intelligence and ambition. He's level-headed, if somewhat irritable and impatient, always in the middle of something or working to get from one point to another. Between this and the fact that he lacks both sentiment and empathy, Lucilius is brusque and cold in conversation, and maybe sardonic when he's feeling lively. His most 'easygoing' chats are goal-oriented; he's open to listening to other opinions, provided they're useful.
So unsurprisingly, Lucilius was feared and treated with suspicion by his peers—his overreaching achievements and intractable nature didn't win over fans amongst the other Astrals. Which didn't bother him any. Notably, Lucilius does not crave power, acceptance, or most of the usual ego fodder. His intense drive is motivated by little more than the pursuit of knowledge, a constant need to be tinkering, experimenting, and surpassing what already exists.
And also, he really has some beef with god.
So his entire goal (destroy the world and everyone in it) has a vast emptiness of meaning behind it—he has absolutely nothing to gain from his plan. It's specified that he has no intention to survive his own apocalypse, or to allow his allies to escape it; he means to destroy everything god created just to, as the game puts it, flip him the bird. This destructive nihilism—a desire to reduce a stagnant world to nothingness—makes him both aggressively ambitious and extremely difficult to faze. He barely bats an eye at his own death, because he doesn't need to be alive for his plans to succeed.
Even outside of mass destruction, Lucilius' mind is always jumping ahead, constantly calculating and never happy to rest on its own laurels. He effectively rewires the entire world before scrapping everything in favor of a 'better' plan (nevermind that this would kill hundreds of his own, sentient creations). He lacks fear and a sense of self-preservation or remorse, willing to take extremes if they're the most effective course. This conviction and intellect are enough to gain him devotees, but it's clear he has no emotional attachment to them—or for that matter, anything else. When Belial, his most loyal companion, revives him after 2000 years, Lucilius proceeds to scold and literally kick him while he's down.
His impersonal, rational perspective isn't usually wrong on the tin, but it is deeply cynical and cold, and his own inflexible worldview is ultimately what brings him to heel. At the same time, it's also one of his greatest assets: Lucilius' will is unshakable, even after defeat, and his rebellious confidence is second to none. To the detriment of the entire world, Lucilius holds fiercely to his ideals and free will, and takes a proactive approach to destroy anything that challenges that.
But as ruthless and pragmatic as he is, his obsession with progress does not always result in evil. Most of his creations are stalwart and just, and even the most horrible of them has a 'good' counterpart. This is not to undercut Lucilius' callousness (however incredible his accomplishments, he was never actually in it to help his fellow man), but ultimately he's guided by neither morality nor malice. All that matters to him is progress, even if it leaves him behind in the process.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Astral powers are left mysterious in the story; it's shown that they can survive extraordinarily harsh conditions, use something akin to magic, form powerful pacts with Primals, teleport around, etc. They seem functionally immortal as they don't appear to age past a certain point.
Since Lucilius himself isn't shown using these abilities on-screen, for simplicity's sake I'll be nerfing him to have none. And while he doesn't age, he can still be killed quite easily. All he'll have going for him is his big fat brain. He's smart enough to create all kinds of world-endingly terrible stuff, but can't realistically do so without an excess of resources and time.
INVENTORY: The clothes on his back and a large, decorative, pointy staff.
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
